Why do my chapters have a repetitive structure?
Troubleshooting: Why do my chapters have a repetitive structure?
If you notice that PublishFlow is consistently starting or ending your chapters with the exact same format—such as beginning every chapter with *"In the last chapter, we covered X. Now, let's explore Y."*—you might be wondering how to stop it.
Naturally, PublishFlow’s AI is trained to write dynamically and avoid repetitive phrasing. When the AI uses highly repetitive structures, it is almost always because it is strictly following a directive within your Book Requirement Document (BRD).
While it can be frustrating to see the same pattern repeat, the good news is that this is a quick and easy fix! Here is how to resolve the issue.
Step 1: Check your BRD for overly broad instructions
The AI takes your instructions very literally. Sometimes, an instruction written with the intention of creating a good reading experience is interpreted by the AI as a strict structural template to be used in every single chapter.
To check your settings, open the BRD Creator. From there, you will land on the Outline tab. Be sure to check this tab, as well as the Writer Instructions and Style and Tone tabs.
Look for instructions that the AI might be misinterpreting. Here are a few examples of well-meaning instructions that can cause repetitive patterns:
The "Smooth Transition" TrapWhat you wrote: "Ensure a smooth flow between chapters by connecting previous thoughts to new ones."How PublishFlow interprets it: The AI thinks it must explicitly state the connection every time, resulting in every chapter starting with: "Having just discussed [Topic A], we will now move on to [Topic B]."
The "Clear Takeaway" TrapWhat you wrote: "Always make sure the reader remembers the core lesson of the book."How PublishFlow interprets it: The AI inserts the exact same summary paragraph at the end of every single chapter to ensure the rule is followed.
The "Consistency" TrapWhat you wrote: "Maintain a consistent, logical structure for introducing new concepts."How PublishFlow interprets it: The AI uses the exact same rigid formula (e.g., Definition → Short Example → Conclusion) for every concept, making the text feel robotic.
Step 2: Delete or refine the instruction
Once you find the sentence or rule causing the repetition, you have two options:
- Delete it entirely: PublishFlow's base model is already trained to write cohesive, flowing books. Often, you don't need to over-instruct it on basic writing mechanics.
- Make it specific rather than universal: Instead of saying "Always summarize," you might leave that out of the general Writer Instructions and only add "Include a summary for this specific topic" in the individual chapter outline.
Step 3: Update the BRD and rewrite the chapter
Once you have removed or changed the problematic instruction, you need to apply the changes to your manuscript.
- Click the Update BRD button to save your new settings.
- Please note that changing the BRD only affects chapters generated after the update.
- To fix an already written chapter, hover over the specific chapter in the left sidebar and click Rewrite. PublishFlow will now regenerate the chapter using your updated, repetition-free instructions.
