# Editing inside PublishFlow

# General Editing Tips
This guide covers best practices for working efficiently inside PublishFlow while writing, editing, and organizing your book. Following these recommendations will help you maintain consistency, preserve formatting, and give you maximum flexibility throughout the writing process.

### Copying and Pasting Content
If you are copying content from external AI tools, we recommend using the platform’s **copy button** whenever possible instead of manually copying and pasting the text.
This helps remove hidden formatting and ensures that your content formatting remains intact when pasted into PublishFlow.
Following this approach will generally result in a smoother editing experience and fewer formatting issues.

The same applies when copying content out of PublishFlow. If you want to edit your outline in an external AI tool and import it back later, always use PublishFlow’s **Copy** button. This preserves the hidden formatting and structure, making it much easier to keep everything synchronized when re-importing your edited outline.

### Rewriting Chapters
If you're not satisfied with a generated chapter, you can regenerate it inside the Writing Tool at any time.
To rewrite a chapter:
1. Hover over the chapter in the left navigation bar until the three-dot menu appears.
2. Click **Rewrite Chapter**.
The AI will generate a new version based on your current outline, instructions, style settings, and available context.

### Moving Chapters
You can reorganize your final book structure at any time inside the **Format & Export Tool**.
To move a chapter:
1. Click and hold the **six-dot handle** next to the chapter in the left navigation panel.
2. Drag the chapter to its desired position.
3. Release it to update the chapter order.
This allows you to quickly restructure your book as your ideas evolve.

### Deleting Chapters
If you want to permanently remove a chapter from your book structure, you will need to update the BRD.
To do this:
1. Open the **BRD Creator**.
2. Either ask the **BRD Assistant** to delete the chapter, or remove it manually from the outline.
3. Click **Update BRD**.
The changes will then automatically sync to the Writing Tool and the chapter will be removed from your manuscript structure.

### Delete Chat History
To clear your chat history, hover over the top-right corner of the chat assistant and click the **Settings** icon that appears.
From there, select **Clear Chat History** to delete the conversation.

### Add Tables with the Writing Assistant
You can ask the Writing Assistant to generate tables directly inside your manuscript.
Simply tell the assistant what information you would like to include, or let it decide where a table would add value and improve readability.
Once created, you can further edit and customize the table yourself inside the **Format & Export Tool**.

### Changing the Word Count
The word count is a flexible target for your book. It helps guide length, but it does not limit what you can write. You can change the word count in two ways, though with important differences:

**1. If you haven’t started writing yet → use the BRD**
Set or change the word count in the BRD before you begin writing.
* This ensures your book structure is built around the correct target
* It helps keep all chapters aligned from the start
* It is the cleanest way to define your book length

**2. If chapters are already written → use the Writing Tool**
Adjust the content directly inside the Writing Tool.
* Tell the writing assistant to expand or add more content
* The BRD change will not update existing chapters automatically
* This avoids needing a full rewrite just to match a new word count

||| Important: Changing the word count in the BRD after chapters are written will not update existing content automatically. Those chapters would need to be rewritten to match the new target.
If you have not started writing yet, update the word count in the BRD first. If you have already started, it is usually easier to continue writing and expand naturally.

Changing the word count is flexible either way. Use the BRD before writing starts, and use the writing tool to expand content once you are already in progress.
